Barcelona: A Mediterranean Mosaic of History, Architecture and Lifestyle.

Barcelona isn’t just a destination; it’s a lifestyle. It’s a city that offers you a unique variety of history, buildings, gastronomy, architecture, and a sense of keeping up with what is new, even being the first ones to implement new ideas on urban planning.  Whether you’re a history buff, a foodie, an architecture geek, or a sun-seeker, here is why Barcelona remains one of the most captivating corners of the world. There’s so much to see in Barcelona; here’s a glimpse. We have other blog posts with more info, and we keep adding ideas.

🏛️ An Architectural Time Machine

Few places on earth allow you to walk through 2,000 years of design in a single afternoon. Even though we recommend a week in Barcelona to fully enjoy everything that we have to offer.

  • The Ancient: Original Roman walls, aqueducts, and the underground Roman city at the Museu d’Història de Barcelona, right in the heart of the Gothic Quarter.

  • The Medieval: From the Barcelona Cathedral, the churches of Santa Maria del Mar and Santa Maria del Pi, to the civil gothic at the Generalitat, Ajuntament and Royal Shipyards.

  • The Modernist: The whimsical creations of Gaudí and his contemporaries. Places like Palau de la Música Catalana. Sagrada Familia, Casa Ametller, La Pedrera, and Palau Güell should be on your to-do list.

  • The Contemporary: The sleek, glass-and-steel innovations of the 22@ district. Enjoy great views of the city from the top of Torre Glories, visit the Barcelona Design Hub Museum, and do not forget ” Els Encants”, one of the most modern city structures with a flea market full of surprises.

🏃‍♂️ Barcelona a City That Lives Outdoors

In Barcelona, the “living room” is the street. It’s in our Mediterranean genes—we are practically hard-wired to be outside. The city’s energy is physical; you’ll see it in the Gegants (giant papier-mâché figures) parading through the narrow alleys during a Festa Major, or the breathtaking “human towers” known as Castellers that reach toward the sky, the Sant Jordi tradition of roses and Books. From the skaters at MACBA to the running groups along the beach, the city is a perpetual motion machine.

  • Marathon and Half Marathon if you are her on February or March. Plus many 10k races, being the Firemen and the New Year’s Eve, some of the most “curious”ones.

  • Saint George’s Day is on April 23rd, the day for the dragons, roses, and Sant Jordi. It is our Valentine’s Day, and we give books and roses as presents.

  • The Giants walking around the city, always with music, is another tradition you can stumble into quite a few times during the whole year.

  • The Castellers will take your breath away as you see them climb to create the amazing human towers. During the festivities of La Mercè, which take place towards the end of September, it is one of the best moments to admire it.

🎨 The Artistic Soul: A City of Geniuses

Pablo Picasso and Joan Miró shared a lifelong friendship and a love for Barcelona; this is why they made personal donations to the city to create their museums. Plus, the frescoes from 1000 years ago located at the MNAC are a good reason to explore Catalan art.

  • Picasso Museum: Tucked away in five medieval palaces, this is an essential stop to see the formative years of the genius who changed art forever.

  • Fundació Joan Miró: Located on Montjuïc hill, this museum offers a bright, colorful journey through the surrealist world of Barcelona’s most beloved native son.

  • The MNAC: almost 1000 years of Catalan art, with the best European collection of  Romanesque art. Plus, it has some of the best panoramic views of the city.
