Montserrat & St Ignatius of Loyola Cave

One of our most successful tours amongst Jesuits and clients who studied in a Jesuit College or University.

Certainly, Montserrat is the most popular destination from Barcelona. The Abbey of Montserrat is a monastery full of history located on top of the mountain and deeply linked to the spiritual experiences lived by Saint Ignatius. Before he underwent a spiritual conversion Saint Ignatius was a Spanish knight. He participated in many battles and he was wounded at the Battle of Pamplona in 1521. During his recovery, he underwent a spiritual conversion that would take him to the Holy Land. On the way, he overnighted at Montserrat where he experienced a vision of the Virgin Mary and Jesus. The next day he left there his sword, gave away all his fine clothes, and dressed in rough clothes and sandals. He walked down the mountain and arrived at Manresa where he stayed 11 months of his life.

What will do?

  • Departure at 8:30 to Manresa to make sure we arrive at the time the church opens.

  • In Manresa we’ll visit the Church of Ignatius and the Cave where he prayed and lived an intense spiritual experience, finding the inspiration to write  “The Book of the Spiritual Exercises”, a guide towards the orientation of one´s life depending on God and the base of the Society of Jesus.

  • The Cave is a place of pilgrimage and worship visited by Jesuits, and students from many Loyola Universities interested in the places that were of great importance in the life of Saint Ignacio.

  • After visiting the Cave we’ll drive to Montserrat enjoying some exceptional views of the mountain and visiting the Monastery that was of great importance to Saint Ignatius.

If time allows we’ll listen to La Escolania, the Boy’s Choir. With their white voices sing the Salve Regina and El Virolai the hymn dedicated to Our Lady of Montserrat.

We´ll have a snack before heading back to Barcelona, local cheese and honey “Mató amb me” is an option. There are several food facilities at Montserrat.

Manresa is the town where San Ignacio de Loyola or Saint Ignatius of Loyola settled down and remained for 11 months in 1522. He was fascinated by its beauty, its location by the Cardener river, and the kindness of its inhabitants who took care of that poor Pilgrim who had walked down Montserrat without shoes.

In Barcelona, you can find Saint Ignatius too, take a look at this picture

If you want to visit the Cave of St Ignatius in Manresa, but the chauffeured tour’s price exceeds your budget, we can organize a tour with public transport, it will take you a little longer, but we can take advantage of the journey to talk about Barcelona, Catalunya, Montserrat and of course about St Ignacio. We encourage you to book the tour and specify that you would like to go by public transport.
