Montserrat & Sitges

Montserrat is a very important site for the Catalan people and has been one of the favorite landscapes of painters for centuries. Even some of the most important architects of the 19th and 20th centuries have left their footprint in Montserrat, such as Gaudí, Domenech i Muntaner, and Puig i Cadafalch.

There’s a fascinating art museum in Montserrat with a wide range of paintings, including works by Ramón Casas and Santiago Rusiñol, two of the best-known Modernist artists. Benedictine monks believe that art and its beauty help us stay close to God.
So, after visiting Montserrat we’ll head toward Sitges to enjoy lunch at some of its seaside restaurants. During the summer, we recommend starting at Sitges and going to Montserrat afterward, and in winter, the other way round.

One of the most important Modernist painters, Rusiñol, used to have a summer house in Sitges, which is now the Cau Ferrat Museum, a really interesting museum with a wide range of medieval and modern art, which is finally open again to visitors after a long and extensive renovation. We can say, without a doubt, that it was well worth the wait, as it looks fantastic. We can also enjoy the old part of Sitges on a leisurely walking tour.

Did you know that Facundo Bacardi was born in Sitges? And this is not the only connection between Sitges and Cuba, there’s much more; the “havaneres” (popular songs from Catalonia) and “chiringuitos” (beach bars) help forge a much closer link between the two places than you might imagine.
