it is a half-day tour to Tarragona a city located about 100 km south of Barcelona. On the way, we´ll enjoy the views of the vineyards and fields.
Tarragona is an interesting excursion to know the Roman legacy that is preserved in this city located on the shores of the Mediterranean Sea. Ancient Tarraco became the capital of the Roman Empire more than 2000 years ago. It was the residence of the Emperor Cesar Augusto from 27 B.C. to 25 B.C., and it became a very important colony in Roman Hispania and reached a population of over 30,000 inhabitants. In fact, in Roman times, Tarragona was larger, more important and more imposing than Barcelona. The predominance of Barcelona came later during the Middle Ages.
On the way to Tarragona, we will make a stop on the highway to see up close an incredible structure: the Aqueduct of Ferreres preserved entirely, built in blocks of stone and we will walk on it, where 2000 years ago circulated the water that supplied the population. It is a unique opportunity, and it is worth it.
Once in Tarragona, we will see the remains of the robust Roman wall, visit the Amphitheater where gladiator fights were disputed, shows with wild animals and where slaves and Christians were sacrificed. We will see the remains of the Roman Circus where chariot races took place, and that the film Ben-Hur so well immortalized, and which could accommodate 25,000 spectators, almost the total population of Tarraco. We will also stroll through the historic center of Tarragona, through its streets full of history and with a beautiful medieval Cathedral, which you can visit if you wish. In Tarragona, there are numerous places to eat before returning to your hotel.
It is always advisable to leave Barcelona no later than 9:00 to arrive at an appropriate time and find all the monuments open.
