is a half-day excursion, about 30 miles away from Barcelona, it only takes about 1,5 hours to get there.
Combines nature (Montserrat is a Natural Park since 1987) art and spirituality. A unique combination and it is so close to Barcelona that you just have to visit it.
Discover a sedimentary mountain, formed about 50 million years ago! , you’ll be amazed by its beautiful and unusual landscapes. Since 1025 (almost 1000 years ago!), it has been the home of a Benedictine Community that nowadays consists of around 70 monks.
Almost as old as the presence of the Benedictine Monks is the one of Our Lady of Montserrat, a wooden sculpture of the Virgin Mary that dates from around 800 years ago. She is the Patron Saint of Catalunya, on Sunday’s we share her with many local families that get together to put her a candle, to thank for her protection or enjoy mass at the Basilica.
She’s particularly unusual in that she is one of the few Black Virgins you can see in the world. The Catalans know her as “La Moreneta”.
Usually it is possible to hear one of the oldest boys choirs in Europe, the Escolania, a boys’ boarding school in Montserrat where they get a general education, plus singing, and training in at least two instruments.
If you’re feeling particularly energetic, athletic, and outdoorsy, we will be more than happy to walk with you towards Sant Miquel, one of the most beautiful sites near the monastery, or to the fantastic views of Sant Joan, just let us know!
We recommend another of our best sellers if you would like a full day tour, Montserrat & Saint Ignatius of Loyola Cave
